Explanation of Pony Divisions at WGGYB
Foal Division
Early introduction to baseball aimed at promoting teamwork and developing an interest in baseball. Games take place on Saturdays and last about 1 hour. Practice is usually 1 day a week for about an hour. Everyone bats off the Tee (no coach pitch) and plays on the field each inning. No outs are recorded, no score is kept, and parents may accompany children on the field.
Shetland Division
Games are 5 innings long. Players will have to opportunity to hit off of pitching machine or tee in the first half before transitioning to solely machine pitching in the second half to prepare them for the coming divisions.
Pinto Division
This is an exciting advancement as real baseball is played. The kids pitch in this division. Here the batters face a live pitcher and can strikeout. Stealing bases is also introduced.
Mustang Division
We introduce major league rules in this division. They are exposed to leading off, pick-offs, and dropped third strikes. Games are played on a 60-foot diamond with 44-foot pitching distance. This is the first introduction to pro style baseball. At this level, the basic fundamentals of the game are further reinforced and refined.
Bronco Division
At this stage we again increase the size of the diamond - Broncos move up to 70-foot diamonds with 48-foot pitching. This helps the players gradually increase their skills and strength as they prepare for Colt and high-school 90-foot diamonds and 60-foot pitching.
Pony Division
Pony increases the field size again to 80-foot diamonds with 54-foot pitching. This continues to help players gradually increase their skills and strength as they prepare for Colt and high-schools 90-foot diamonds and 60-foot pitching.
